This series was inspired by my travels through China. It is made using a team of 4 glass-blowers. Two separate forms are blown, one with all the colours & patterns & the other is black glass. The two forms are joined end to end & then the black one is turned inside out over the coloured form, in a very difficult operation. Special enamels are then melted into the surface & 'reduced' by removing oxygen from the flame to give the distinctive surface colours. The piece is then formed as desired. After cooling the vase is deeply carved on a diamond lathe to revel the pattern. It is then reheated in a kiln, attached to a blow-pipe & 'fire polished' in a delicate operation using the heat from the furnace.
