This project involved a series of three cast glass works for the newly refurbished Children's hospital at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle. Accessed over three floors leading from the hospitals spectacular atrium, the works were situated at the entrance to specialist children's units & clearly visible from the main atrium. Each work consists of 9 separate cast panels.
To reflect the close interpersonal bonds that develop between children as patients, nurses and consultants it was decided that the hands of real patients and carers should be cast in incredible detail and immortalised as life casts into the 27, 48% lead crystal panels. The background of each glass panel contains decorative three dimensional textures created by representations of texts taken from dozens of get-well messages and cards. The 27 panels weigh in at over 350kg. The project took nearly 9 months to complete.
